Awesome video, really enjoyed. Last year I got myself a Kindle Scribe. Unlike a lot of commentators I do actually enjoy the writing process on it. In fact, I've saved myself money on not buying loads of pens and paper. I keep all my notes on here. So for a financial investment, maybe it was worth it for this alone. However, the reading..hmm. I have read 2 ebooks on here in a year. It's not the same. I like to feel that I physically own my books, I like to carry them and caress them and put boomarks in them. I wont be using my scribe for reading.

The idea of the hunger games after watching this movie just seems like the capitol taking revenge on the rebellion. But they are totally forgetting why people rebelled in the first place. We can argue for centuries about human nature, but I truly want to understand why we do not learn from history. Why we ignore facts? Snow went on and on about history but it was from his perspective. Revenge is a never ending cycle, and wealth will never make you happy. So what are you really trying to protect and control? Fear of human nature is where we tend to lose our humanity. To get trust, you have to give it. And that’s something Snow never actually tried to do.

I'm a hybrid ebook and physical book guy. Depending on the book, I will often buy the physical book just so I have it but will also get the ebook. If I'm completely objective, ebooks are superior and will likely make more people read, which is a good thing.

Tropes are used to reduce cognitive load, like an archetype. Just as with parsing minutiae, parsing tropes is how unintelligent people try to appear intelligent. Congratulations on spotting the mechanism used to bring tens of millions of words and concepts into an easily consumable 300 page book without having to write and then read the tens of millions of words. Text book can’t see the forest for the trees… oh god, a common idiom, better point it out like I’m smart (also a thing used to reduce cognitive load).

Anytime a book is described as "the new Hunger Games" or "Hunger Games meets x" my brain turns off. Bc 99.9% of the time the only aspect of the Hunger Games to be found is a fight to the death w/ none of the substance that makes The Hunger Games the masterpiece it is.

I'm baffled at the Mr Darcy's references to compare him with this main character, when we who actually read the book know that Mr Darcy was actually a fantastic employer 🤣, like when Elizabeth visited Pemberly, all the staff talked wonderful of their master and how good administrator of his father's state he is, which is one of the things helped Lizzie to change her image of him being arrogant and condescending in every aspect of his life 🤣.

Actually, some Circus games in ancient Rome and even fighting events in earlier civilizations often featured this type of “everybody against everybody” fight (mostly not to the death, though). In the Middle Ages, they were even part of tournaments for knights and they were called “melees”.

I have a Kindle and read quite a lot on it but after some time I just got this craving of wanting to read a physical book and for me, the biggest plus of physical books is seeing how my bookmark shifts after every session and seeing my progress. With my Kindle I have no real sense of progression but it is still an incredibly convenient device for on the go. Also, although they are related; reading books and buying books are almost two different hobbies: Buying physical books is a LOT more fun than buying e-books and then actually reading them is, overall more enjoyable to me in physical form

Neither of these are battle royale stories, but . . . The Running Man by Stephen King (originally published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman) features a televised gameshow where the contestant tries to survive while being hunted by death squads. There's no arena. They are free to go anywhere they want in the whole country but the show vilifies them and incentivises citizens to report them. The longer the contestant survives, the more money they/their family wins. And if they last 30 days, then they win and the hunt stops. King has a bad reputation for writing weak endings, but this one is truly awesome. A lot of people claim that Collins stole parts of HG from King, particularly how the whole thing is televised to the masses for entertainment purposes Your discussion of body swapping remined me of the short story "Dreamer" by Brandon Sanderson. I think it's more of a 1 on 1 battle, but there's lots of body swapping and it has an unexpected ending

15:40 I get your point that the people who say this often use it as a dogwhistle to dunk on things liked by mostly women, but think this is a little unfair of a generalization. I've met many people who will literally only consider a partner if they play ice hockey or refuse to ask about someone's schedule. I don't think that the books are necessarily "wrong" for being unrealistic or toying with ideals that would make for an unhealthy relationship, but I think socially its something we should question when people bring idealizing unrealistic/toxic traits to real life expectations and desires.

i just wanna say that the cataagorizing of stories based on thier simmalaritys can be beautiful and magical as it is in joseph campbells interpretation of stories he thought shared the comman structure of his monomyth. he did not think that that could be used as an algorthym to generate reapeats his belief was that there was religius signifigance to this retelling of the same tropes themes structures whatever, that an outside being or art relm was passing these things into collective human consiousness for some sort of reason, that all these cultures seperatly devolping the same sorts of things meant somthing about the nature of humans or whatever generates art through humans i dont really know if i agree with all that but im just saying this seemingly callus catigorization can itself be sort of a piece of art and it can be cool and human and beautiful just as much as the stories that are being analyzed

Watching the video made me realize that I basically do a readathon with with my mother every year when we go on vacation in the fall. We always reserve at least a couple days purely for sitting in the shade on the beach or in a garden or something and reading. We have been doing that every year since my parents got divorced, which coincided pretty much with when the I started getting into reading around age 10 or so. We always joke that half my luggage is books and (since she has an e-reader) half of hers is the coffeemaker, because those are the things we need for a great time: books and coffee. The only years we skipped were during the pandemic and the year when I was abroad as an exchange student. She also usually does an extra shorter spring reading vacation just by herself in Sardinia where we have friends, and she does nothing but read and go for walks with the dog for 5 days. This year she was pleasantly surprised that I wanted to join her because she always thinks I go on these beach vacations with her for the swimming and the nice weather and it's too cold for that in the spring. But really it was one of the best vacations I had in a long time. I never realised how special our little tradition is and how thankful I am that I can share this hobby with my mother even though we have wildly different tastes. I am 28 now and usually when people ask why I still go on vacation with my mother every year I just say it is because she pays for it and who would say no to a free holiday. But actually I love those weeks where we both get away from all the stress and just enjoy out shared love of books and stories.

I was very skeptical of eBooks as well. I hated reading on my phone or tablet. But then I got a Kindle Paperwhite about 1.5 years ago. Wow! Still prefer physical books, but I can get so many books for free from my library without going anywhere, which is much faster (I think I can read more). It’s much easier to hold while lying down or when I have one hand than a large book. I still want to build a physical library, but the Kindle is easy to read on and very convenient.

The kindle interface, ie home, settings, account details etc would have to be the most stupidly designed and unintuitive I have ever had the 'pleasure' of using. The designers at amazon after removing physical buttons seemed to have completely lost their brains. They've tried to copy Apple UI design (itself with many problems) and successfully made it even worse. Your issue about not being able to easily jump to glossary, maps etc is completely due to this awful UI design, and is such a simple thing to fix. HInt if I tap anywhere that is not turning a page, display a toolbar with bookmarks and customizable quick options. But let's be realistic, the kindle today is nothing but a 'content delivery device' to sell more books, user experience is a far secondary priority to shareholder happiness.
